Device reset without power washing
If your player goes through a trauma of some kind then you may find that it loses
its settings. Typically you’ll see advertisements for Chrome rotating on-screen
instead of your signage! In that case we recommend performing a reset or a “wipe”
in Chrome terms.
- Unplug the player from power or press and hold the power button to turn off.
- With the player connected to the TV insert a paperclip into the small hole on the
left side of the device (above the Kensington lock slot) and depress the button
while powering the player on. Note: For non-Ultra players the reset pinhole location will vary. For Chromebox Mini the small hole is located on the right side (below the slot). For Chromebit devices the pinhole location is on the underside of the device. - It will say “Chrome OS is missing or damaged” or “Please insert a recovery USB
stick” on screen. Now with the keyboard press CTRL+D
NOTE: if pressing CTRL+D doesn’t change what’s on screen then most likely
your keyboard is not compatible. We recommend using a wired keyboard in this
case. - Press the recovery pinhole button briefly once more
- On the next screen press the “enter” key.
- The player will reboot and you’ll come to a login screen
- Press CTRL+ALT+E. It should now say “Enterprise Enrollment” at the top.
- Login with players@smartsign2go.com and password of Happyplayers
- Cycle power on the player once more and then you will have a registration code
on the screen which you or we can use to create a new player registration under
SETTINGS>PLAYERS
- If in the process it asks to send a verification code to a phone number (5894) then go ahead
and do that and we will forward the code to you once we receive it.
Device Reset (ChromeOS “Powerwash”)
If your device is exhibiting erratic behavior and other remedies don’t solve the problem then a reset may be in order.
- Connect a keyboard and mouse, then reboot the device.
- After the device boots up, press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+R
- A prompt should appear asking if you would like to perform a Powerwash. Confirm to continue.
- Once the device reboots itself, follow the prompt to connect to your network (if using WiFi) and accept Google T&C.
- The exact steps vary by ChromeOS version. Select “for work” if asked. When you get to a login screen, press CTRL+ALT+E to change to Enterprise Enrollment mode (onscreen messaging may not change). Enter “players@smartsign2go.com” for the email and “Happyplayers” for the password.
- *IF you are asked to enter a phone number for verification then please use our text support number of 802-851-7446. Send us a text to that same number asking for the verification code and we will forward it to you.
- Next, the kiosk app should launch and present a registration code to re-register the device to your SmartSign2Go account.
- Login to your account from a separate computer. You can register the player either by clicking on the play icon on your preferred channel at the bottom of your dashboard, OR you can click on settings at the top-right and then Players at the right where you’ll see a space to type in the registration code, player name and select a channel. You can delete the original player registration from your list of players.
Re-installing ChromeOS
If you see a message on your TV that says “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” or if the Powerwash option above doesn’t resolve issues with your device then installing a fresh version of ChromeOS may be in order.
- Locate a blank USB drive of at least 8GB in capacity
- Launch the Chrome Recovery Utility extension from your office computer’s Chrome browser. Search for Chrome Recovery Utility in the Chrome Web Store if the hyperlink in this article isn’t working for you.
- On Step 1, choose “Select a model from a list” and choose “AOpen” for the Manufacturer and “Chromebox Mini 2” for the model (Smartsign2go Ultra). Please check bottom of device if working with a different model.
- Follow the prompts along until the process has finished creating the USB recovery drive.
- Turn off your player.
- Look on the back of your device and locate the pinhole just under the lock symbol. GENTLY insert a paper clip into the pinhole and depress the button.
- While holding the recovery button pressed, power the device back on until you see a message that says “ChromeOS is missing or damaged.”
- Let go of the paperclip and then insert the USB recovery drive.
- The device will install a fresh version of ChromeOS over the next few minutes. When done, click “Get started” or equivalent message.
- Follow the prompts along to connect to your network (if using WiFi) and accept Google T&C.
